Supreme Judicial Council denies issuing Interpol notice against former interior minister

The Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council announced its denial of issuing any notice requesting Interpol to return former Interior Minister Abdul Amir al-Shammari to the country on charges of embezzling 16 billion dinars.

A statement issued by the council today, Tuesday (June 30, 2026), said that its media center monitored a post on social media containing a 'Red Notice' attributed to the Presidency of the Public Prosecution requesting Interpol to return al-Shammari.

The statement confirmed that the posted document is 'forged and incorrect', warning against 'practicing these unlawful behaviors', and noting that the concerned authorities will follow up the perpetrators to take legal action against them.

No confirmation or denial regarding the validity of the accusations against al-Shammari or details of the investigations related thereto has been issued by the Presidency of the Public Prosecution or any official judicial body.

This incident raises questions about the extent of forged documents' spread and the exploitation of social media platforms to disseminate unverified information, especially in cases involving former officials.
