Iranian Army Refuses to Back Down on Closing Strait of Hormuz

The Iranian Army announced its refusal to retreat from closing the Strait of Hormuz, stressing that reopening it will not come through war or U.S. pressure.

Brigadier General Mohammad Akremi Nia, spokesperson for the Iranian Army, said the strait will remain closed “until further notice,” emphasizing that the only way to reopen it is “respecting the rights of the Iranian people” and Washington’s commitment to the memorandum of understanding between the two countries.

He added that the Iranian armed forces “will not budge an inch” on this issue, while affirming vengeance for the blood of martyrs, especially the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

This statement comes after the Revolutionary Guard announced the closure of the strait to maritime navigation, in response to what it described as “U.S. interventions” in the region, amid escalating tensions between Tehran and Washington.

The strait is a vital passageway for oil transport, and its closure threatens global energy supplies, affecting fuel prices in Iraq and importing countries.

Akremi Nia said: “We will stand until the last breath, we will not budge an inch regarding the Strait of Hormuz; the only way to open the Strait of Hormuz is to respect the rights of the Iranian people and the United States’ commitment to the provisions of the memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States.”

The Iranian Army did not specify the mechanisms for implementing the closure or its duration, raising questions about its impact on maritime trade and the movement of Iraqi vessels, especially those passing through the strait.

It also remains unclear to what extent Tehran is prepared to bear possible economic and international repercussions of this measure.
