Meteorological Authority expects continuation of heatwave above 50 degrees

The Meteorological Authority expected the continuation of the severe heatwave in Iraq, with temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius recorded in the central and southern provinces.

The Authority indicated that the weather will remain clear and sunny across the country, affected by the seasonal thermal low, with a noticeable rise during daytime hours, especially at noon, while early morning and night hours will see relative moderation.

It stated that temperatures in the central and southern regions will be close to yesterday's levels, while they will decrease slightly in the northern region.

The Authority did not clarify the government measures taken to alleviate the impact of the heatwave on citizens, especially given the repeated power outages and deterioration of water services in the most affected areas.

It also did not specify the responsibility of the relevant authorities to ensure the safety of outdoor workers or vulnerable groups such as patients and the elderly.

Background: Iraq experiences severe heatwaves annually during July and August, but this year's temperature rise occurs amid an aggravating energy crisis and deteriorating public services, increasing health and social risks for the population.

No official warnings or emergency plans have been issued by the Ministry of Health or Civil Defense to deal with potential cases of sunstroke or dehydration, despite the recurrence of these phenomena in previous years.
