Meteorological Authority expects temperatures to rise above 50 degrees this week

The Meteorological Authority and Seismic Monitoring forecasted a rise in temperatures in Iraq to exceed 50 degrees Celsius during this week.

The authority indicated in its report that the seasonal thermal low will enhance its effect with an upper-level high pressure, leading to a severe heat wave affecting most areas of the country, especially the south and center. The authority expected to record temperatures close to 50 degrees during midday hours, with activity of northwesterly winds that may raise dust in desert areas.

The authority warned citizens against direct exposure to sunlight between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., and urged drinking plenty of fluids and avoiding leaving children and the elderly in closed vehicles. It also called for avoiding leaving flammable materials inside vehicles and limiting work under the sun to prevent heat stress.

Seasonal background: This rise in temperatures coincides with the peak of summer in Iraq, where the country records its highest annual temperatures during this period. Although the authority confirmed that the wave is consistent with seasonal nature, the repetition of severe heat waves raises questions about the readiness of infrastructure for health and electricity services to meet the increasing demand. No government entity has announced emergency plans to mitigate the wave's effects on vulnerable groups or outdoor workers, despite repeated warnings about the risks of heat stress and dehydration.
